Urban forestry grants, Shapiro’s budget, & more

House bill on energy efficiency standards passes to the Senate. Legislation sponsored by Representative Jennifer O’Mara would set energy efficiency standards for household appliances in the commonwealth. “[A]ppliance efficiency standards are a simple way to reduce energy consumption, lower pollution, and generate huge savings for Pennsylvania consumers and businesses,” said Deputy Director Flora Cardoni for environmental grassroots group PennEnvironment. The bill is now in the hands of the state senate for consideration.
Public Health Management Corporation announces urban forestry grantees. PHMC selected ten community organizations to receive nearly $300,000 in support of urban forestry projects. Called Tree Forward, the grant program is a component of the Philly Tree Plan, which is a ten-year plan to equitably increase tree canopy across the city. The program aims to do so by bolstering the work already being led by neighborhood groups.
Gov. Shapiro delivers budget address. On Tuesday, Governor Josh Shapiro delivered his 2026-27 budget address to the General Assembly in Harrisburg. Shapiro’s plan – which focuses on education, housing, economic development, and community safety – will attempt to lower utility bills with PJM, the power grid operator serving Pennsylvania.
Climate change-induced flooding threatens historical buildings. Rising waters and increasing storm intensity are destroying national historical landmarks, like the Fairmount Water Works, due to climate change.
