How to Make a Succulent Terrarium

Although I attended a "how to" terrarium workshop a few years ago, I needed a refresher course to create a succulent terrarium. I had collected a few plants from my trip to a local farm and wanted to display them in a beautiful setting instead of having the same ol’ plastic pots around my apartment. Here are the steps to make a succulent terrarium:

World Population Day 2013

Today July 11 has been named World Population Day 2013 by the United Nations. Each year the United Nations focuses on what they consider an important global issue. In 2012 the UN spotlighted the need for universal access to reproductive health services. And, in 2011 the focus was on their 7 billion campaign and reflected on the growth of 2 billion the world experienced between 1987 and 2011. This year the UN's focal point is the issue of adolescent pregnancy. The UN is calling on government officials to take action to help young girls make "responsible life choices and realize their potential." According to the UN Population Fund roughly 16 million (!) girls under the age of 18 give birth each year and another 3.2 million have what are deemed as unsafe abortions.

Cloth Philadelphia: East Passyunk’s Baby & Diaper Store

Curious about cloth diapering? Look no further than Cloth, the new hotspot on East Passyunk in Philadelphia. Did you know an estimated 18 billion diapers are thrown into landfills every year? They take 500 years to decompose, are expensive... and disposable. Plus, some diapers contain dangerous chemicals dioxins, VOCs and possibly carcinogens. Do you want your precious baby in that? Angela and Shai Halperin recognized that parents new to cloth diapers often must buy online. As two working parents, they had a lot of online successes (and failures) with cloth diapers. Plus, the closest store was 30-40 minutes outside of Center City Philadelphia. They recognized the need more and more for a Cloth Diaper store. Cloth was born. I stopped by Cloth to talk with Angela about more about the store. Find out more, after the jump!

Bonnaroo Sets the Standard for Green Music Festivals

A few weeks ago, I went to Bonnaroo for the first time. Between the music, people, and positive energy, there was a lot to love. But one of the things I loved most about Bonnaroo wasn’t any of that – it was the efforts they made to lessen their environmental impact. Bonnaroo sets the standard for green music festivals across the world. This year, they won the Pursuit of Excellence Award from the governor of Tennessee, which recognizes previous Environmental Stewardship award winners who continue to demonstrate environmentally friendly practices. There are many ways Bonnaroo maintains its environmentally friendly reputation. Here’s what they do:

Reader Question: Why is Farm Raised Fish So Bad?

GPB reader Aaron C. asks "Why is farm raised fish bad? I see so much of it at the market. " Good Q,  Aaron. Here's the deal... When most people think of fish they think "healthy." And, yeah fish is an excellent source of lean protein and packed with nutritious omega 3 fatty acids. But depending on where and how your fish is sourced you might be getting a dose of some not-so healthy stuff as well. It's not always easy to break down the labels. The term farm raised actually sounds appealing - perhaps it evokes images of Americana agriculture - until you find out what it really means. What does farm raised mean? Farm raised fish is commercially brought up in tanks, net pens, or other enclosures.
