Today is Arbor Day, yo. As Arbor Day is all about planting (and appreciating) trees Mayor Nutter will appropriately celebrate Arbor Day with TreePhilly at the tree planting and volunteer day held at Marian Anderson Recreation Center.

Ah, spring produce is finally here! I don't know about you guys but I've had about all the apples, pears and winter citrus I can handle for a while. It's time for some variety. When it comes to the best of spring produce here's what to choose, how to pick the best of the best and a few seasonal recipes to boot:

Do you have half-used medications and unused drugs stashed around your home? Perhaps a prescription you didn't take completely but it's sitting in your medicine cabinet? Those pill bottles just clog up your cabinet space and can be a P.I.A. Luckily, there's a collection event on Saturday for your unused drugs. We celebrate our "Earth Day" every day, but today gives us an opportunity to reflect on what Earth Day means to those around our city. Philadelphia has thousands of amazing individuals working to help us achieve cleaner air, water, transit and healthier food options. In honor of this green holiday, we asked a few local individuals what Earth Day means to them:

She is a junior at the University of Pennsylvania. What do water and national parks have in common? They're both priceless public assets that should be free and accessible to all! If you haven't started seedlings yet for your spring & summer crops, it's time to get started. First thing: which potting mix should you choose? Although Miracle-Gro tends to dominate Home Depot & conventional 'home' stores, you may be supporting a scary brand. Miracle-gro has fertilizers and synthetic chemicals, criticized for not improving soil over the long term but instead leaching unnatural chemicals into streams and ponds. The Philly Farm & Food Fest returned to the Philadelphia Convention Center this past Sunday. Over 4,000 attendees chatted with local farmers,  artisans & businesses. The second shot at Philly Farm & Food Fest had a great mix of tastes, education & variety. The cheeses were mouthwatering, the sauerkraut was freshly fermented, and there was even crisp local apple cider.   So when you think of Houston, Texas the image of an environmentally city may not be what you envision. And, well you'd be correct. It's true Houston is well known for big hair, big houses and  big oil;  Plus in my experience residents don't walk anywhere (one exception may be across the popular Galleria mall) and recycling bins in public areas are somewhat scarce. But enough Houston criticizing - for today ;)  While visiting the city recently I found a restaurant gem I had to share. Haven restaurant is all about seasonal fare and inventive dishes. The atmosphere is polished yet earthy and formal enough for a special occasion but not too stuffy for a slightly boozy brunch. Plus, it's a green certified restaurant. Haven's produce, herbs, and honey are grown and harvested from their organic garden located on the property.
