How to Winterproof Your Home…With FIRE

This sponsored post comes to us from Clean Currents, another post in the It's Not Easy Being (Dave) Greene Series. We met Dave Greene in a previous post. Yikes, talk about an Indian Summer! Even though it's been climate-changingly toasty this past week, the Farmer's Almanac is predicting a nasty winter -- and it's right around the corner. So last weekend I got my housemate Jack to help me out with winterizing our windows, and we actually succeeded in making it through the project without any major accidents, spills, or mistakes! Find out how to winterize your home (with FIRE) with Dave, after the jump:

Head & The Hand Press Debuts CSAs for Books: Guest Post

Guest Post by The Head & The Hand Press Founder Nic Esposito When I founded The Head & The Hand Press, it was almost counter-intuitive that I wanted it to be a for-profit venture. After spending many years in the non-profit sector, primarily in urban farming, I was under the impression that I could not satisfy my ideals and fund an operation through “business”, which I had been conditioned to reject and revile. But as I began developing the concept of The Head & The Hand, I was posed with the most important question I have ever been asked. Find out more from Nic, after the jump.

What to Do with Boatloads of CSA Veggies

Community-supported agriculture programs have so many benefits: They give you access to fresh veggies delivered straight to a neighborhood near you, they can help you save some cash over grocery-store produce, and they give you a direct way of supporting local farmers. Yet one of the main problems of joining a CSA is this: You end up having a mountain of veggies—often, ones you’ve never heard of—in your fridge at all times. While it’s amazing to have an overflow of lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes as a salad base, what on Earth do you do with piles of kohlrabi, rutabaga and lacinato kale? Here’s a diary of how I handle a week with my CSA veggies. Read my full guest post on Be Well Philly Today!

Regardless of whether you're a Philadelphia resident or visitor, the government shutdown takes you away from glorious sights like the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Valley Forge Park with rolling hills. This past weekend, I visited the "Niagara Falls of PA", Bushkill Falls. It also happens to be a National Park, which means those people who are trying to follow my lead 2 days later are SOL. What can you do in & around Philly that does not involve a cracked bell or battleground? No fear reader, I found a few for you.

Vegan Pumpkin Pie Smoothie Recipe

Pumpkin season is in full swing... pumpkin lattes, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin beer... it's here! Word is Starbucks is celebrating their 10-year anniversary of the pumpkin latte but I'm still feeling cold beverages during these mild fall days. So I set out to make a cold treat that made use of the glorious orange squash-like fruit. The fact that it's a bit healthier and much lower in sugar than a pumpkin latte is just icing on (the pumpkin) cake. It happens to be vegan but you could un-veganize (creating our own words today) if you wish to use cow's milk. Read on for the recipe!
