16 Years Strong: Green Philly’s 2024 Recap

Highlights of our milestones, impact, and community contributions.

2024 was an incredible year of growth, connection, and impact for Green Philly. From securing over $200,000 in grant funding to expanding our reach through diverse content and meaningful events, we’ve continued to push boundaries in advancing sustainability across the region. This year, we launched new initiatives like our podcast, Gritty and Green, and the inaugural EcoFair at Cherry Street Pier.

Our storytelling elevated underrepresented voices, highlighted inspiring community leaders, and educated our audience about everything from green stormwater infrastructure to local wildlife.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team, supporters, and community. Thank you to everyone who contributed to an amazing year at Green Philly.

Here’s a look at 2024 by the numbers and the accomplishments we’re most proud of!

2024 by the numbers:

  • Received over $200,000 in grant funding, including ongoing support from the William Penn Foundation, and new grants from Press Forward, Every Voice Every Vote (EVEV), and the Independence Public Media Foundation.
  • Over 1.6 million impressions on social media and over 60.5K engagements. We connected people to sustainable solutions across Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook; in addition to our weekly newsletter and stories.
  • Connected 1,920+ people to sustainable solutions through our 14 events hosted across Philadelphia neighborhoods and the suburbs.
  • Revamped our membership program, growing to over 80 individual members and 10 organizational members.
  • Honored 28 nominees at the 7th annual SustainPHL.
  • Celebrated 16 years of Green Philly.
  • Published articles by 14 diverse writers.
  • Broadcast 10 podcast episodes with our new launch of Gritty and Green, hosted by Meredith Nutting.
  • Welcomed Angie Bacha, our Civics Reporter under the EVEV initiative, to the team.

Accomplishments we’re proud of:

  • Highlighted changemakers in our stories. From our piece on neighborhood connections through community gardens, to Civic Catalysts features including Emily Yates and how Kera Gibbs brought together neighbors in Germantown, we covered inspiring stories and provided sustainability solutions in our content.
  • We love sustainability so much, that we even made GSI go viral! Over the past 16 years, our audience has changed how they get information. We educated our followers about chimney swift migration, mammatus clouds, Penn Treaty Park beavers and more directly on social media.
  • Launched our EcoFair at Cherry Street Pier, a day of flash talks, panels, vendors, workshops and more.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Elevated stories from underrepresented communities through our diverse contributors, ensuring a more inclusive dialogue around sustainability.
  • Deepened ties within the sustainability community, intentionally hosting interactive and educational events across Philadelphia neighborhoods.
  • Celebrating Local Leaders: SustainPHL served as a platform to inspire action by highlighting grassroots leaders and sustainability champions making a tangible difference in their communities.
  • Member Benefits: Enhanced membership offerings with new perks, including exclusive newsletter content, community sustainability tours and more, creating a stronger sense of belonging among members.
  • Become a Supporter!
