Recycle Used Flip Flops & Shoes – Where Can I (Wednesday)

Last week I was on my way into the Phillies game... and RIGHT before they searched my bag, I blew out my flip flop... just like Jimmy Buffet once did. After mourning my beloved Havvies (and darting to the Clubhouse store to purchase a pair of Phillies Flippy Floppies), my next dilemma was where to recycle my flip flops. With so many cell phone upgrade options available every 2 years or so, it's easy to go through cell phones like wildfire. According to eRecyclingCorps’ co-founder & CEO, David Edmondson, 1.2 billion devices will be sold around the world in 2012, but only 1 percent will be recycled. It's important to recycle Cell & smart phones since they're made from precious metals, copper, and plastics which are energy-heavy to mine & manufacture. PHS President Drew Becher Wants YOU to Attend Philadelphia Flower Show

As the Philadelphia International Flower Show kicked off their Hawaii: Islands of Aloha to the public on Sunday, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's President Drew Becher is pretty much Philadelphia's man of the week.  Last year's Flower Show brought in $61 million to the Philly region and enhanced local programs like Plant One Million.  Luckily, we were able to sit down with Drew for a few minutes to chat about the Drew's favorite exhibit at the Flower Show, PHS's wins & challenges to greenify Philadelphia, and Drew's secret 'green' habit he's been practicing since age 10. Where Can I Recycle Wednesday… Yogurt Containers?

Philadelphians often get confused with food containers. Did you know the majority of food-container plastics can be recycled? Yogurt containers, plastic containers & juice bottles can ALL go in your single-stream recycle bin.  Just make sure to rinse & remove the food remnants (I use leftover dishwater or stick in happily with a pan trying to soak..) Keep on recycling!
