Philly EcoCamp combines Sustainability + Tech

Philly EcoCampLooking for an event that combines sustainability and technology?

Philly EcoCamp is a series of events to promote sustainability and environment through technology, happening in Philadelphia June 20-22. Here’s an overview of what to expect for the weekend.

EcoCamp Philadelphia 2014 Schedule:

  • Friday 6/20: Workshops and a Happy Hour at Field House.
  • Saturday 6/21: Unconference
  • Saturday 6/21 & Sunday 6/22: Hackathon where teams can build a collaborative, creative project while working with environmental experts to solve real sustainability challenges.

Important Details for EcoCamp Philadelphia:

  • What: Conference, hackathon & unconference hosted by Philly tech company Azavea.
  • When: June 20-22, 2014
  • Where: Friends Center – 1501 Cherry Street, Center City Philadelphia.
  • Food: Coffee & lunch are included with your registration.

Workshops

Working with Building Energy Efficiency Data.

Rich Freeh, Adam Agalioco and Alon Abramson Environment (Mayor’s Office of Sustainability,the Consortium for Building Energy Innovation, Penn Institute for Urban Research)

Why? The MOS just released data on municipal buildings’ energy usage and is planning a similar release for commercial buildings later this summer, as part of the city’s commitment to reduce citywide building energy consumption by 10% by 2015. The speakers will walk through the data to brainstorm app ideas from the open data community and find priorities around additional municipal energy data sets.

Building Your Own Low Cost Environmental Sensors

Matt Fritch and Chris Nies (Philadelphia Water Dept’s Office of Watersheds, greenSTEM Network, Code for Philly)

Why? Chris and Matt are bringing arduinos and sensors to help participants build low-cost devices to monitor soil moisture in a rain garden, water level in a well, etc. This participation-based, hands-on workshop will help expose environmental scientists to DIY solutions that will save them time and money.

Andrew Emma of Park & Rec’s Philly TreeKeepers will talk about Urban Tree Canopy maintenance issues.
