The latest sustainability news this week

Philadelphia has been awarded $1.3 million in federal funds from the U.S. Department of Energy to support four key projects focused on energy efficiency and conservation. These initiatives include expanding energy education in vulnerable communities, developing a cool roofs program, creating a clean energy workforce strategy, and improving energy management in the School District of Philadelphia. The projects align with the city’s goals of reducing carbon emissions, enhancing resilience to heat, and creating sustainable job opportunities.

The second annual Philadelphia Urban Resilience Forum will focus on practical strategies for property owners and communities to address climate challenges like extreme heat and flooding. Hosted by AIA Philadelphia, Green Building United, Preservation Alliance and ULI Philly, the forum will feature discussions on urban resilience at various levels, from regional to neighborhood and property scales. The Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (SBN) was recently featured in Inc. magazine for its innovative approach to helping small businesses offer retirement benefits. SBN partnered with Entrust Financial to create a Multiple Employer Plan (MEP), providing small businesses with affordable and accessible retirement savings options. This initiative not only helps small business owners overcome common barriers, such as setup and administrative costs but also allows them to offer sustainable investment choices that align with the values of their employees.
