It’s hot out there. For 556,000 people in Philadelphia, it feels 9°F higher due to the built environment. In Climate Central’s analysis of urban heat islands in 65 major U.S. cities reveals that 34 million people, or 68% of the studied population, experience temperatures at least 8°F higher due to the built environment. Urban heat disproportionately affects historically redlined areas. Cities can mitigate heat by planting street trees and installing cool roofs and pavements.

Philadelphia’s youth are calling for renewable energy in a new video by Physicians for Social Responsibility Pennsylvania, highlighting the need for public input in transitioning PGW away from fossil fuels. Philadelphia is hosting a Youth250 workshop on September 16 at Eastern State Penitentiary, inviting young adults (18-30) and senior-level institutional leaders to co-create ideas for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
