Gasoline spill in Delaware County. A gasoline leak that was first identified back in August was finally traced to a quarter-inch hole at the bottom of a tank in Delaware County. Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection ordered that homes within 1,000 feet of the leak be provided bottled water and that the company conduct a thorough investigation into the leak. Vision Zero seeks ambassadors. The City’s Vision Zero Task Force is accepting applications for their Vision Zero Ambassador program for the upcoming spring and summer. Ambassadors will be trained on traffic safety issues and asked to engage with their communities about their unique concerns. Find out more here. 

SEPTA trolley tunnel expected to re-open mid-January. SEPTA announced on January 2 that repairs to the West Philly trolley tunnel are finished. The agency plans to reopen the tunnel mid-January after completing test runs.

Playing in nature helps boost children’s creativity. Nature-based preschools – like the Schuylkill Center’s Nature Preschool in Roxborough – offer children opportunities for growth and exploration outside. Some experts say that the time in nature boosts children’s creativity. Other advocates are also making nature education more accessible and diverse, like Elaine Wells with the Tiny Trekkers program. Phase 2 of Twice Weekly trash collection begins. January 5 marked the beginning of Phase 2 of the Twice-A-Week Trash Collection program. The new expansion includes households within the boundaries of Vine Street to Hunting Park Avenue, from Broad Street to the Schuylkill River and Vine Street to Glenwood Avenue from Broad Street to the Delaware River.
