Friday Wrapup: World Water Day, Young People Don’t Care About the Environment

Yesterday’s World Water Day helped bring awareness of how much water we use daily.  Here’s what else went on in the green world this week:

  • Shocker! Philly.com’s newsflash is that Philly is dirty and littered.  But especially vacant lots. (Speaking of which, did you volunteer for Philly Spring Cleanup Day with us yet?)
  • SEPTA is getting 245 new hybrid electric-diesel & diesel-powered buses. Sounds groovy since the majority are fuel-efficient hybrid buses rather than straight-up diesel.
  • The New York Times published a study that George Bush young Americans aren’t as green as we think! Only 21% of us think its important to clean the environment, vs 1/3 of the baby boomers thought that when “they were our age”.  The theories are that we’re not as exposed to nature, we’re less likely to write to congress, we’re fatigued by confusion about climate change AND are straight-up lazy.  Obviously we love you active readers, so keep up the good fight.  (Or try sharing our Facebook page to a friend to get the convo going.)
  • Speaking of having doubts, what about this damn heat wave in MARCH? The Washington Post connects the links between global warming & off the chart temps (or as Bill McKibben said via Twitter, “…It’s not just off the charts, it’s off the wall the charts are tacked to”.)
  • Shake Shack is coming to Philly, and Eater Philly shared a pic of the “Wall of Green” construction site. The ivy, vines & shrubs will be donated to children’s charity. While charity is great, I kind of wish they were growing a wall of lettuce so Shake Shack could PROMISE wall-to-table toppings…
