Friday Roundup: Earth Day Week, Kashi Backlash & Celebs on Bikes
Hope everyone had a Happy Earth Day Week and was able to get their green on! Here’s what you missed in sustainability news this week:
- Although none in Philly showed up on the official list, the Green Restaurant Association compiled the Greenest restaurants in the US of 2012 for Earth Week! Put them on your “to-dine’s” when you venture outside the city.
- Kashi is facing a major backlash after a picture of removed products from a VT’s store shelf has gone viral. Instead of the cereal, a sign states that 100% of soy used in Kashi products is Genetically Modified & contains many pesticides. Gross. Ironically enough, one of the Kashi Facebook Page’s top “Likes” is the “Non-GMO Project” next to their angry FB “Fan” complaints…
- The Streets Dept is Keeping up their sweep up! The Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee (PMBC)’s Saturday Clean Block Caravan will visit the 26th Police District (2000 N. Franklin St, 2400 N. Lawrence St, 2400 N. Mutter St) from 9:30 AM – 11 AM tomorrow, Saturday April 28th. The caravan will have reps from city departments & host giveaways to block residents in the neighborhood clean-up.
- Celebs… They’re just like us! This fun tumblr has pics of Hollywood icons riding bikes including the one above of Ronald Reagan and Virginia Mayo. I wonder if any of them had to flip off cars in bike lanes or other fun biking adventures like we have here in Philly…
- A friend (Thanks Dre!) sent me over this link of algae-powered street lamps. Considering we’re overfishing our seas & could potentially have an excess of algae, I fully support exploring this as an energy source. (Take that, anti-clean energy critics!)
- Speaking of energy critics, more people are taking public transit to combat the high gas prices. Probably in combination that and being green is so HOT right now.
- Shocker, 2 years after the BP oil spill, there’s still a LOT of damage to the coral reefs. Just in time for the 1st criminal trial for the May 2012 BP spill.
- We’re super-excited to head down to the Sweetlife Festival for some organic & local foods & groovy music. Is anyone else heading down?
Have a great weekend, readers! Any green-ness on your list?
