Quick Tip – Eating at Work

Rather than use your company’s disposable coffee cups, plates and utensils, bring in a reusable glass or plastic dishware set from home.  You’ll save plastic from being thrown away, use nicer platewares and avoid being the person stuck without a knife! You could even use...

Jack Johnson’s Green Concert – Philly Style

Last night I saw my fav musician, Jack Johnson in concert on his Philly stop. (aka Camden - but how many attendees are Camden residents?) I was impressed. On top of being a very talented musician, he's super-green. Here's my green JJ concert journey: When I bought the tickets in March, I opted for the .50 cent carbon offset (per ticket) option. (Great way to reduce your carbon footprint!) Following my purchase, Jack's crew sent an email with suggested positive changes you can make during your concert experience like carpooling or taking mass transit to the show, what eco-options they offer at the show etc.a very talented musician, he's super-green. A Nod to Philly Bikers

Over dinner last night, a friend told me that she recently started riding a bike around the city and is really enjoying it. Her new-found love affair with biking caught her off guard because she had always been intimidated by cyclists. Aren't they afraid of getting hit by crazy Philly drivers?!? But her fear has been conquered, "It's like you're in a video game! I can get everywhere in over half the time!" BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag)

Like my co-blogger Enviro-Beth, I too have a pet peeve. Mine is plastic. I'll admit it - When the canvas bag started making an appearance, I didn't really 'get' it. As a kid, I tried sneaking in my old homework into the newspaper bin until my Dad broke the news that the township wouldn't take them. It hurt my feelings to put those in the trash.) So why are reusable bags important?

Quick Tip – Shop smart

Check your local recycling program for what number plastics it recycles. (Plastic products are numbered 1-7.  Philly accepts all of them (updated 12/10).) When out to buy your next shampoo bottle or dish-soap, choose products you can toss in the recycle bin instead of the trash...

Paper: Such a necessary evil…

Paper... yep it's inescapable ... we use it constantly to communicate and to maintain records. It's used in packaging materials, cleaning products, even occasionally as a food ingredient. It's certainly a necessary resource. But do we have to use so darn much? Some people save practically everything in paper form. Now, I'm not talking about the sentimental stuff like old concert ticket stubs or birthday cards. I'm referring to those of us who keep piles of memo’s from '05 that they still haven't gotten around to reading , their dry cleaning bills for the past decade, Us Weekly's from the Jen Aniston and Brad era... some people may call these folks hoarders, I call 'em paper junkies.
