PhillyCarShare Sold Out, No Longer NonProfit

Although I had my own experience last fall as a Zipster for Zipcar, I fully respected the PhillyCarShare non-profit option... Another alternative where Philadelphians could share cars, pay less, and support the 'little' guy. PhillyCarShare announced that it's being purchased by Enterprise Holdings (aka the world's largest car rental company). They had been in financial trouble - aka

Reader Question: What’s Up With Fair Trade?

GPB reader, Jack asks... Q: I see the term “fair trade” on products. I know this is a good thing but what does fair trade really mean? A: The term fair trade refers to the movement that helps farmers or producers experience better trading conditions. Essentially, the approach focuses on exports coming from developing countries to developed countries and emphasizes paying the producers more (and more fairly.) Read on!

Overfishing: Another Ocean Danger for Animal Conservation Week

This post continues our Animal Conservation Week, to highlight animals in danger & steps you can take to help! As we continue Shark Week, shark preservation highlights another problem we're facing in the ocean: Overfishing. 70% of the world's fisheries are fully or overly exploited, depleted or in a state of collapse. That's a scary statistic since previously 'common' fish like Bluefin tuna & Atlantic salmon are severely overfished and (learn more, after the jump!)

Shark Week! Dangerous Truth of Shark Finning

Shark enthusiasts are rejoicing this week as Discovery Channel's "Shark Week" returns to the small screen. Personally, I started off watching the highly-anticipated predatory series Sunday evening with some fine (organic boxed) wine, delicious cheese and a good friend. Although the media portrays sharks as a threat, there's only an average of 5-10 human fatalities per year due to shark attacks... You're more likely to be killed hornets, wasps, bees or dogs. Yet an estimated 73 million sharks are killed yearly - from habitat loss, pollution, overfishing, and most of all, shark finning. (For more on shark conservation and what YOU can do, click through!)

‘Under da Sea’ views with Message for Blue Planet Live at Mann Center

Whales, sharks, seals, schools of fishes, killer whales, penguins. The Mann Center certainly delivered incredible visuals of all of these aquatic creatures (plus many more!) combined with amazing sounds from the Russian National Orchestra during last night's Blue Planet Live. Starting off Blue Planet Live with a video of the biggest creature to ever roam the earth (including dinosaurs), the Blue Whale is fascinating at the least, as you can see from this video: (catch the video and much more after the jump!)

Philadelphia CowShare: Local, Sustainable Meat

Where's the beef?! Apparently a CowShare system popped up in my inbox from DailyCandy this morning: There's Farm CSA shares, Car Shares like Zipcar and many other "shares" to hit Philly. For those who want to improve their carbon footprint from eating meat but can't cut the habit completely, Philadelphia CowShare seems like a

After recently attending the Mann Center's "Down the Abbey Road" Tweetcert, I'm beyond psyched for "Blue Planet Live"! My Rebuttal to Philly Mag’s “Cyclists Get What’s Coming to ‘Em’ Post

Philly Mag published a post yesterday by Carrie Denny titled “Philadelphia Cyclists Finally Get What’s Coming to ‘Em..”     *hand to forehead.* As Ms. Denny begins, “The Boyfriend says that bikers throughout the city of Philadelphia know well the hum of my 2000 Land Rover Discovery. You know what I say? I wish they did. Then maybe they’d get the hell out of the way.” Get the hell out of the way?? Oh, Carrie, it’s been brought-en. Throughout the article, Ms. Denny (find out more, after the jump!)
