Today is national America Recycles Day. Of course at GPB we pretty much think everyday should be recycle day. Nonetheless, I'm grateful for a holiday that commemorates the cause. America Recycles Day has been celebrated since 1997. AmericaRecycles.org encourages people and organizations to host events and activities that foster recycling education among colleagues, friends, neighbors and kids on or around this day. Yesterday Mayor Nutter announced that Philadelphia will celebrate America Recycles Day at several locations throughout the city. Attention all those who bike Philly streets: The Complete Streets Bill is up for discussion in City Council TOMORROW, Thursday 15th. Councilman Mark Squilla, the  Mayor's Office of Transportation and Utilities, the Streets and Law Departments, and the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia all worked together to improve those often rowdy biker-car-pedestrian relations. Heck, maybe they even were inspired after reading my rebuttal to Carrie Denny's infamous "Cyclists suck, my gas-guzzling SUV rules all Philly Streets" Philly Mag post. (Maybe Philly Mag even got the point since they mentioned this bill is even good for cars.) The bill has 2 main goals:

Hey ladies - Do you have some extra used bras lying around? Or gents, have an ex or two's left over bra in your closet that you don't want to return? You can recycle used bras to give them a new life for a woman in need! (Find out where and how, after the jump!)

In the wake of the election there's more to discuss than the presidential race and the party's winners and losers. Though it wasn't on my ballot one thing on my mind this past week has been California's decision to veto Prop 37, the labeling of genetically modified food. These results prompt me to ask the ever articulate question ... huh? Proposition 37, dubbed The California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act would have required food companies, grocers and retailers to label products with genetically modified ingredients as such. This means consumers could pick up any item on their grocer's shelves and make a more informed buying decision.

The Philadelphia Marathon is grabbing tons of attention for offering up some prime 26.2 mile real estate for disheveled NYC should-have-been runners. But there's more attention on the way for the Philadelphia Marathon's sustainability efforts! As I pointed out with the Broad Street run, large running events produce a TON of waste. It's cold outside, it gets dark at 5, and we're practically ready to haul up the holly before getting our free-range (or tofu) turkeys. You know when you stumble across a new term or concept that seems to come completely out of nowwhere...And then all of a sudden this foreign word keeps popping up? Maybe it's all the new-agey e-newsletters I receive but that's what's happening with me and the term "Earthing." My first thought was wow people love adding "ing" to nouns and creating a new verb; My second was I need to know what this is all about. So what the heck is earthing?
