Get on 2-Wheels & Celebrate May as Bike Month
May is officially Bike month, and we’re ready for some two-wheeled action! Philadelphia’s the #1 bike-commuting city and the bicycling rates keep rising, so we’re in the PERFECT city to celebrate! How can you celebrate this joyous occasion?
- You can unlock prizes from now through August 31st through the 2012 Bike PHL Commuter challenge. Participate solo or sign up with friends, coworkers, friends, etc. Last year’s Philly challenge logged almost 150,000 biking miles.
- Fight theft like Batman by registering your bike.
- Wednesday, May 16th (aka tomorrow), the 8th Annual Philadelphia Ride of Silence honors those who have been killed or injured in motor-vehicle related accidents. Make sure to wear your helmet and get to the Art Museum by 6:45 PM to ride.
- Bike to Work Day returns this Friday, May 18th at 7:30 AM. Join Mayor Nutter on the Ben Franklin Parkway to partake in this tradition.
- Forget food pop-ups: The Philadelphia Bike Coalition is hosting a Pop-up Bike Service Station on the South Street Bridge, May 24th from 3-6 PM. Get free air, ask your bike questions & find out about the Bike Coalition.
- Stare at sexy Milan Shaft-Drive bikes.
- Defend those bike lanes from being cut in Philly with some stats. You can outfit an entire city in bike lanes for $60 million – but only ONE MILE of highway can be built with that amount…
Still trying to convince your friend/dad/neighbor/girlfriend/colleague/boyfriend to switch to the biking lifestyle? If Americans switched to a bike for just one four-mile round trip journey per week, we’d collectively save 2 BILLION gallons of gas. Next, check how to get started buying a bike.
