Get Smart About Milk
What’s your milk of choice these days? I love Blue Diamond unsweetened vanilla almond milk. It’s delicious in cereal, a great cow’s milk substitute in recipes, and a key ingredient in vegan hot cocoa.
However, if you can’t get onboard with almond, rice or soy milk then there’s a few things you can pay attention to when choosing cow’s milk. Go for milk that has been certified organic and contains no artificial hormones. (You can find this info on the label.)
Why? Old-school dairies typically inject cows with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH.) Appetizing, huh? The logic is cows pumped with this hormone will produce milk faster. Some scientists worry that rBGH will negatively affect consumers. The hormone is speculated to cause breast cancer and other disease.
