According to Philly.com, Philadelphia voters approved all 3 ballot questions on the polls yesterday, including the question that made the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability permanent. This means the Office will live on for years, even after Mayor Nutter leaves office in Jan 2016 & his green-loving legacy behind.
The ballot was approved with a overwhelming nearly 2-1 ratio (as did the rest of the ballot questions).
Update 11/6/14: We asked Katherine Gajewski, Director of Mayor’s Office of Sustainability about how she thought the ballot outreach effort went. Here’s what she said:
My sense was that this was a good test of the advocacy community. I was really pleased with how organizations rallied to help get the word out, (which was) an encouraging experience as we prep for the mayor’s race.
Congrats again, MOS! 🙂
Another exciting moment happened when Tom Corbett natural gas lover current governor conceded to governor elect Tom Wolf. Wolf was our vote for the “greener” governor, with a more aggressive spin on sustainable plans.
Wolf’s victory speech discussed the importance of education, taxing natural gas drillers and threw the curveball of continuing to incorporate coal into our “diverse” energy. (Coal isn’t exactly sustainable…)
In our other ‘green’ votes, Chaka Fattah almost 88% of the vote and Art Haywood won by a landslide.
Good work local voters on all the green wins. Let’s just hope this GOP takeover doesn’t halt our progress.
