SEPTA Saves Cash with Sustainability

Riding SEPTA isn’t just good for sustainability, our public transit system is  learning to save dollars too, according to Plan Philly!

SEPTA is in its third year of its formal sustainability program. All of the initiatives are trying to add environmental, social and economic value.  But, SEPTA is finding that sustainability is an easy way to save money too! Last year, they tried creating energy in creative ways, including  braking trains (captured & reused at power stations) and turned unused real estate into a self-sustaining urban farm.

Here are some examples of how dollar bills were accumulating in SEPTA’s pockets:

  • Streamlining the printing capacity resulted in a cool savings of $100,000
  • Reducing electricity costs at headquarters – $300,000
  • PECO “Smart Ideas” rebates – $34,706
  • Programs in review or on waiting list – $130,385
  • Waste oil recycling – $144,969
  • Recycling construction debris materials – $49/ton (avoiding landfill costs)

SEPTA is anxiously waiting for Governor Corbett’s transportation-funding package (expected next month) will include. Good thing they receive grants (4 in 2012) for supplemental funding!
