Plant One Million Trees Campaign – PHS

On a sidenote, this marks Green Philly Blog’s 400th Post! Thanks for reading, whether it’s your first visit or 400th 😉 We appreciate all the continued & amazing support.

Hope you had a chance to visit the 2011 Philadelphia International Flower Show this past week, which benefited the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society! PHS announced the Plant One Million campaign during the show, an initiative that will plant 1 MILLION trees in 13 counties in Greater Philadelphia Region, New Jersey & Delaware. The campaign will improve the environment, create jobs, strengthen communities & improve air/water quality.

Plant One Million – Philadelphia region to be Covered in Trees

The Plant One Million campaign helps to replace millions of trees lost in recent decades due to development in our region, while simultaneously educating volunteers to “plant, count & tend” trees.

The goal of the project? Restore our region’s “tree canopy cover” (or the area shaded by trees) to 30%. This also coincides with Mayor Nutter’s Greenworks campaign to plant 300,000 new trees by 2015. (The other 700,000 trees will be decorated outside the city limits.)

Delawareans can receive free trees and work with the Delaware Center for Horticulture to plants its 20,000 goal by 2020 within the city of Wilmington.

Trees are vital to the environmental and economic well-being of the region, and this program will have a major impact on the health of our communities,” said PHS President Drew Becher. Becher previously was director of Million Trees NYC, having planted 400,000 trees to date in NYC.
