Repair Fair, Boxers 5K & Rally for Rock: Weekend Guide: 9/12 – 9/14

Happy Friday, readers!

This week brought us new bike sharrows [Philly MOTU], reminder to report cars blocking bike lanes [This Old City] and free workouts every day of the week [Be Well Philly].

Ready to kick off the weekend? Whether you want to jog in the park, rally for school music education, fixed busted items or discover homesteading, we’ve got the best weekend events for you!

Here’s the weekend events for September 12 – 14, 2014:

  • Seedlings: Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education hosts parent-child nature activities inspired by the world around us for children aged 2-5 and their parents/caregivers. Pre-registration is required. Fridays in September, 4-5 PM, Schuylkill Center Online.
  • Boxers’ Trail 5K Run/Walk: Run or walk your way through the famed wooded trails where heavy weight champ Joe Frazier trained, starting at Mander Recreation Park. This year’s Boxers’ Trail 5K will benefit the Mander Recreation Center in North Philly, which offers youth programs and East Fairmount Park. Saturday, Sept 13 at 9:30 AM, $20 Runners, $15 walkers, Register online.
  • Rock to the Future Rally supports music education for Philadelphia youth. Enjoy outdoor music, a beer garden from Yards, and hear from Councilman Mark Squilla. Saturday September 13 from 2-6 PM; Franklin Square, 6th & Race Street, Philadelphia.
  • Philly Fixers Guild’s Repair Fair: Tired of looking at your busted necklace, button or toaster around the house? The Philly Fixers Guild welcomes guests from across Philadelphia to bring damaged or inoperative possessions to have a capable volunteer fixer get ’em back in working condition. Rather than throwing out items, repair fairs are a free service that educate the community about troubleshooting and repair. Sat, Sept 13, 12-5 PM at the Sculpture Gym, 1834 E. Frankford Ave. Philly Fixers Guidelines.
  • Schuylkill Banks Kayak Tours continue on Saturday at 6 PM with a half hour of instruction and offer a tour of the Schuylkill between Walnut St Dock & Fairmount Water Works. Register online or call 215-222-6030 x 100.
  • Beekeeping 101: Greensgrow Farms hosts a Beekeeping 101 class to cover what you need to know about honey bees. Learn the essentials for your first year, local resources and discussion. Sat Sept 13 12 – 2 PM, 2501 E Cumberland St, Registration required.
  • Bryn Gweled Homesteads- Free Homesteading Event: Bryn Gweled Homesteads (Lower Bucks County) hosts a free Homesteading Open House on Sunday. 10AM – 4 PM on Sunday, September 14, 2014. Founded in 1940, Bryn Gweled is home to 75 homesteads on 240 acres, and operates as an intentionally cooperative community. Come see how to tend a flock of sheep, keep bees, raise chickens and goats, heat homes with wood, use solar power, garden organically, manage fruit trees, compost, care for septic systems and use Lyme disease reduction devices. Demonstrations include how to build an inexpensive chicken tractor andextracting honey from a beehive. Sun, September 14, 10AM – 4 PM;  1805 Meadow Rd. Southampton, PA 18966; RSVP@215-355-8849 for free potluck lunch at 12:30.
