Philly Free Streets 2018: Our Green Highlights

The third annual Philly Free Streets is coming up to shake up your summer — this time on North Broad Street.

On Saturday, Aug. 11 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., traffic will be shut down from City Hall to Germantown Ave. In 2016, the route went through Old City to Fairhill, and in 2017, it centered on South Street.

The event encourages exercise and outdoor time, with plenty of space to walk, jog, or bike, sans cars.

It’ll also connect Center City to the North Philly community, highlighting all the history and diversity it has to offer. There’re plenty of landmarks to check out, including the Divine Lorraine Hotel and Uptown Theater. Be sure to also take in the 15 stunning murals along the route.

You can find the full list of programming here. It’s full of music, art, food, and culture, but if you’re looking for more eco-friendly fun, here are some of Green Philly’s highlights:

  • Rest stop on Poplar St.: Philadelphia Water Department will lead activities to show how actions at home impact the city’s drinking water
  • Rest stop on Sedgley Ave.: Mural Arts Philadelphia will lead Trash Academy activities
  • Broad St. & Germantown Ave.: Neighborhood Bike Works will activate a mobile bike shop
  • John F. Kennedy Boulevard: Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s (PHS) Farm for the City will be hosting a plant giveaway

All other info, from transportation to times and locations of events, can be found at the Philly Free Streets site!
