Philadelphia Flower Show Animals Decorate Ben Franklin Parkway

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) recently decorated the Benjamin Franklin Parkway with Carousel animals that starred in the 2011 Philadelphia International Flower Show.

9 creatures – including a peacock, camel, rabbit, snail, butterfly, dragonfly, and unicorn; were created with brought to life with a variety of plant materials – primarily with moss and coconut bark – for their re-animation that would “hold up nicely” in the hot and wet weather. A few animals have added flourishes, like the ostrich whose tail feathers are actually made of pampas, a type of grass.

At a PHS spring greening event, the PHS and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation led the planting of perennials, annuals and other plants around the gardens of City Hall, Love Park and Logan Square to motivate residents to beautify their neighborhoods

“The installation of the carousel animals is the first in a series of ‘PHS Pops Up’ events that will transform sites around the city, and surprise and inspire residents and visitors,” said Pennsylvania Horticultural Society President Drew Becher.

Kids can also name and draw renderings for the Philadelphia Flower Show carousel animals on the PHS blog here or email to flowerblog@pennhort.org.
