City of Philadelphia HazWaste & Tire Recycling Events

Have some hazardous waste lying around or old tires you need to dispose of?  The Streets Department is hosting a few upcoming events:

• Thursday, July 21st, 9 AM – 3 PM: The Street Dept is sponsoring another Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event at its Training Center (State Road & Ashburner Street).  This free collection for Philly residents (sorry businesses) will have trained staff help you dispose of haz waste products like old and unused cans of oil-based paint (latex or water based paint is not hazardous), solvents, pesticides, flammable liquids such as old gasoline and kerosene, used oil, antifreeze and brake fluid.  Over 3,700 Philadelphia residents dropped off over 264,000 lbs. of hazardous material during the City’s 2010 Household Hazardous Waste program. • Saturday, July 30, 9 AM – 3 PM, the Streets Dept is holding its 2011 Tire Round-Up Program in the Northeast- Torresdale Avenue & Ashburner Street and Pennway Street & St. Vincent Street. Registered participants (Block Captains, organized community/civic organizations, Town Watch organizations, and Partnership Recycling Groups) may drop off their illegally discarded tires.   The Streets dept has collected over 222,042 tires since 1995.
• Saturday, August 13, 9 AM – 3 PM is the Streets Dept’s Tire Round-Up Program for West Philly: 51st st & Woodland Ave and 49th & Parkside Ave.  Same rules as before – Registered participants can drop off their illegally discarded tires.
• Not a registered participant but want to drop off your tires? Block clubs and community groups can earn money by helping with cleaning and beautification projects. Participants are offered a “tire bounty” of $.50 for each illegally discarded tire they collect & drop off at designated sites  – with a limit of 1,000 tires per group (Max reimbursement to $500 per participant). For more info and to register, call the Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee at (215) 685-3981. *Tires from auto repair shops, mechanic shops, car dealers and private storage lots are required to be disposed of by the merchant, for a fee and not accepted at the drop-off sites.
