Philly’s emissions reductions are low-hanging fruit, local Co-op’s solar & more

Here’s the latest sustainability news in Philly

Two sustainability leaders are unsure if Philadelphia can slash carbon emissions by 2040 or 2050, after a City Council hearing on Tuesday. Although Emily Schapira, CEO of the Philadelphia Energy Authority said “It’s anybody’s guess as to whether we’re on track for 2050,” Liz Lankenau, interim director of the city’s Office of Sustainability, mentioned there’s unprecedented levels of federal funding available for climate-related action, as covered by WHYY.

Weavers Way Co-op is transitioning to solar power at its new Germantown store through a partnership with the Clean Energy Co-op. By signing a power purchase agreement (PPA), Weavers Way, which operates 4 grocery stores and 2 farms, will install solar panels without upfront costs and buy the generated electricity at a fixed rate for 25 years.

The Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania will hold a ceremony with a drumming circle and prayer ties for heritage trees on “Death Row” this Sunday, March 10th from 1-3 PM at the Meadows, (FDR Community Clubhouse, 1954 Pattison Ave, Philadelphia).

Runners & bikers take note: a section of the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT) beneath the MLK Bridge will be closed during overnight hours for two weeks beginning Monday, March 11 for the Martin Luther King Bridge Rehabilitation Project. The overall bridge construction is expected to be complete by Spring 2025.
