New plant discovered in NJ, 56 years of Earth Day & more

Researchers at Temple University have found a rare new plant species native to southern New Jersey. Previously considered under a different name, this species is genetically distant from its relatives, according to their research. The rarity of this discovery bodes well for conservation efforts that will ensure the protection and care of this unique native plant.

After controversial rate hikes, PECO CEO David Vahos steps down. Many Philadelphians noticed their electric bills increased in 2025, while the company experienced record-high profits. This leadership change follows the company’s decision to withdraw its proposal amid backlash from Governor Josh Shapiro.  

Iglesias Gardens is launching the Philadelphia Land Stewards Union (PLSU), a new membership-based group bringing together Philly residents to maintain vacant land. The kickoff event on April 18th, highlighted the vital role of neighborhood stewards, shared the union’s policy priorities, and connected community members with local leaders.
