New high tunnels at the Woodlands, Diverting waste from student moveouts, and more

The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education announced its new Executive Director, Erin Mooney. Mooney was previously communications director of The Nature Conservancy in Pennsylvania and Delaware.

The Philadelphia Orchard Project created two high tunnel greenhouses at the Woodlands, with a goal to grow more exotic fruits and veggies. The project will explore what’s possible to grow in the local climate as climate change evolves. (Inquirer)

Student move-outs at the end of the semester can leave streets full of junk, it’s been nicknamed “Penn Christmas.” PennMOVES partnered with GoodWill to instead donate goods locally, including curbside furniture pickups and options to donate clothes, furniture, books, housewares, waste, food, and other goods.

A local concrete plant is paying up for polluting without a permit. (WHYY)
