New Greenworks Plan Released

Mayor Kenney (and the Philadelphia Office of Sustainability, OOS) released the newest version of Greenworks: A Vision for a Sustainable Philadelphia yesterday at a press conference and online.

So how did Greenworks shape up after we chatted with OOS Director Christine Knapp earlier this year?

Greenworks 2016: New Plan

Changing it up from the last outline of Greenworks with 14 targets across Energy, Environment, Equity, Economy & Engagement, the new Greenworks has set 8 “visions”:

  • A city where all residents have access to healthy food and drinking water.
  • A city where everyone can breathe clean air.
  • A city where everyone has access to clean, affordable energy.
  • A city that is carbon neutral and prepared for climate change.
  • A city where everyone has access to quality parks and green open spaces.
  • A city where every resident has access to safe and affordable transportation.
  • A litter-free Philadelphia that wastes less and recycles more.
  • And a City where all Philadelphians benefit from sustainability education, employment, and economic opportunities.

While the previous Greenworks plan outlined specific goals and numbers, this version focuses on government, community and individual actions. To help supplement these targets, online dashboards have been created on the Greenworks websites:

  • Greenworks on the Ground: Guides to help residents, communities, and institutions work toward each of the Greenworks visions.
  • Greenworks Dashboard: An online platform to provide up-to-date sustainability data.
  • Greenworks Equity Index: A data-driven approach to identify communities not currently benefitting from sustainability and improve outcomes in those areas, forthcoming in spring 2017.

Set on the rooftop of the Parkway Central Library, Mayor Kenney outlined his Administration’s plan for a healthier, greener Philadelphia. As Kenney said,

“The goal of our Administration is to ensure that every Philadelphian – no matter what zip code they live in – is able to thrive and succeed. Sustainability is a key part of ensuring that every resident is healthy, lives in a quality neighborhood, and has the opportunity to prosper.”
