Neighborhood Gardens Trust awarded $125K to make Brewerytown Garden permanent

Grant from the Pennsylvania Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program secures land as community green space

Another piece of land will remain “green,” thanks to funding with the support of local legislators.

The Neighborhood Gardens Trust (NGT) was awarded a $125,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program to acquire and permanently preserve the Brewerytown Garden at 27th and Master Streets. The funding was secured with state funding, supported by Senator Sharif Street and Representative Donna Bullock. 

The grant and a GoFundMe campaign allowed NGT to purchase two privately-held parcels of land, securing the green garden oasis for Brewerytown. The garden included six parcels total, with the largest owned by the City of Philadelphia and protected in its Parks and Recreation inventory as public space.

The Brewerytown Garden provides organic food for neighbors and includes 80 individual beds for gardening, a weekly farm stand, CSA program, a greenhouse and many community, cultural, and educational events.  

“Today, we’re proud and relieved that NGT can permanently protect this community green space in partnership with the gardeners, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the City of Philadelphia, and the many generous community members who stepped up to make this preservation possible,” said Jenny Greenberg, Executive Director, NGT.
