As we emerge from the holiday season, we may be contemplating resolution and pledging to improve ourselves in one way or another. We’re also setting more trash and recycling to the curb, after holiday parties and unwrapping extra packages and gifts.
If it seems like you’re taking more to the curb throughout the year, you’re not alone. TikTok and social media hauls have been blamed for making overconsumption “cool.” However, excessive consumption should be more of a villain: depleting natural resources and increasing greenhouse gases and waste. From deforestation to pollution, the planet suffers as we collectively shop and discard items while keeping up with the Joneses.
That’s why we’re here to help. Green Philly is thrilled to announce our annual theme for 2024: “The Year of Conscious Consumption.” We chose Conscious Consumption to start assessing our lifestyle choices and inspire you to make thoughtful choices that benefit both the planet and your well-being.
Why focus on individuals? Aren’t corporations the problem?
Although corporations impact the environment, with 100 companies being credited for 71% of fossil fuel emissions, companies respond to consumer behavior. Just imagine walking through a Target 15 years ago: would you have seen an entire section of “eco-friendly” products boasting safer labels and eliminating ingredients?
2023 was the hottest year on record. Conscious consumption recognizes the power we have as consumers and empowers us so that we can take collective action. But we’ll also discuss how businesses, non-profits, and government are important pieces of the climate puzzle.
So how will this play out?
Each month will feature a specific subtheme, diving deeper into various aspects of conscious consumption. From sustainable fashion to zero-waste living, Green Philly’s editorial calendar, social media channels, newsletter, and in-person events will be full of content designed to educate and empower you in your local sustainability journey.
Get ready for an immersive experience! Throughout the year, Green Philly has exciting surprises in store, including exclusive giveaways, engaging social media content, and one-page downloads packed with practical tips to elevate your sustainability game.
Green Philly invites you to join the movement towards conscious consumption. Sign up for our weekly newsletter to stay updated on monthly themes, exclusive content, and special events.
