In Climate Central’s analysis of urban heat islands in 65 major U.S. cities reveals that 34 million people, or 68% of the studied population, experience temperatures at least 8°F higher due to the built environment. Urban heat disproportionately affects historically redlined areas. Cities can mitigate heat by planting street trees and installing cool roofs and pavements.
