Chemical spill at Bartram’s Garden, Doctor killed while biking & more

The latest sustainability news this week

Barbara Ann Frides, a 30-year-old CHOP doctor, was killed by a speeding driver while riding with a helmet in the bike lane in Rittenhouse Square. Mayor Cherelle Parker cut $6 million in funding to Vision Zero, an initiative to end injuries from deaths and traffic crashes in the city. Residents who want to see safer streets can contact the Mayor’s Office or their City Council representative or visit the Bicycle Coalition’s website for specific actions like advocating for parking-protected bike lanes. The Roxborough CDC collaborated with Jefferson University’s MS in Sustainable Design program to reimagine Ridge Avenue. Students, guided by faculty and community input, proposed sustainable solutions such as green spaces, stormwater infrastructure, and enhanced walkability. The RDC is now implementing feasible projects like pocket parks and signage to begin revitalizing the historic commercial corridor. Green Philly

There was a potential chemical contamination on the Bartram’s Mile Trail at Bartram’s Garden. Fishing and boating have been canceled until further notice, and a portion of the trail is also closed. Although the nonprofit was notified on July 15th, the Philadelphia Water Department and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) were notified of the possible contamination as early as April 2024.

Pennsylvania proposed a ban of PFAS, aka forever chemicals, in products by 2027. House Bill 2238 would ban selling a range of products, including outdoor apparel, with added PFAS chemicals by 2027-2029.

As Philadelphia heat waves become more frequent with climate change, they also directly impact businesses. Due to recent heat waves, local outdoor bars and restaurants are seeing less revenue, shorter shifts, and shorter work hours for staff. Philadelphia Inquirer
