NBA’s 4th Annual Green Week

The NBA (National Basketball Association) is once again celebrating green week across the league to help promote environmental awareness among fans, and employees.

Some highlights include:

  • Players will wear green headbands and wristbands made from 45 percent organic cotton at games throughout Green Week. They’ll also be sporting organic cotton green shirts provided by Adidas. A few players, including Chris Paul of the LA Clippers showed off bright green sneakers in support of green week.
  • ‘Unlimited Acts of Green’: A new effort this year, Unlimited Acts of Green is a Facebook application that encourages fans to be environmentally responsible. The application, designed with the support of Sprint, lives on the NBA’s Facebook page and provides fans with ways to integrate acts of green into their daily lives. Check it out here!
  • Employee cafes in New York and New Jersey will feature meals with locally sourced and grown ingredients, and host a farmers market on April 4th and April 11th.
  • A cell phone recycling drive presented by Sprint will be available for thousands of the league’s employees.

On the local front, the Philadelphia 76ers celebrated their team green night last week at home v. Orlando (unfortunately they lost by just 6 points) with a cell phone recycling drive partnering with Cricket Wireless. The first 300 fans to donate an old phone received a go green cricket t-shirt.

We applaud NBA green week, but we do encourage the league to implement some of these special green week initiatives all year long. Organic attire, and local food shouldn’t be too tough to come by!
