SUMMARY:Weeknights at the Wagner: Growing Old in the Jungle
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\n\n\nPrimatologist Ben Finkel explores what elderhood means for chimpanzees and other animals in the wild.\n\n\n\nWEEKNIGHTS AT THE WAGNER\nGrowing Old in the Jungle: The Challenges of Aging for Wild Chimpanzees\nwith Dr. Ben Finkel\n\nIt was once thought that wild animals rarely lived long enough to experience age-related declines. However\, substantial evidence has since emerged that senescence does occur in natural populations\, and these deteriorations in vitality are nearly universal across the animal kingdom—shaping survival and reproduction in many species. During this talk\, Dr. Finkel will use chimpanzees as a window into aging in the wild.\n\nLike humans\, our closest living relatives are exceptionally long-lived and\, at first glance\, appear to age gracefully: maintaining body condition and social integration well into old age. Drawing on data from wild male chimpanzees at Ngogo in Kibale National Park\, Uganda\, Dr. Finkel explores growing old in the wild\, challenges of foraging\, travel\, and mating\, and whether chimpanzee’s seemingly graceful aging reflects the adoption of new strategies to compensate for these age-related changes.\n\nBy identifying the mechanisms that link senescence to behavior in a long-lived wild species\, this research offers a lens into how aging has evolved in natural environments and offers a comparative perspective on the evolutionary foundations of longevity\, including in humans.\n\nAn evening lecture series\, Weeknights at the Wagner\, invites experts into our Victorian lecture hall to speak on a range of science and history of science related subjects. Each talk includes a Q&A with the speaker.\nAbout the Speaker\nBen Finkel is a biological anthropologist and primatologist whose research focuses on the evolution of senescence and life-history theory. He is currently a Lecturer at Dartmouth College. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2024\, where his dissertation examined the functional challenges of aging in wild chimpanzees at Ngogo\, Uganda. Ben’s broader research interests include foraging behavior\, dental wear\, fecal particle size\, the social function of testosterone\, and conservation psychology\, with particular attention to the media portrayal of primates.

SUMMARY:Now + Then Marketplace Make Love Market
DESCRIPTION:Now + Then is a curated market that happens ‘now and then’ featuring local artists\, artisans\, makers\, and resellers in Philly. The markets are always free to the public\, dog\, and kid friendly. Local event producer\, Steph Irwin\, started N+T Marketplace in 2021 after her time helping start Philly vintage institution Thunderbird Salvage. \n \nThe community of vendors & shoppers has grown exponentially in the last 5 years\, with monthly markets popping up everywhere from Fishtown to Love Park to Eakins Oval. Irwin sees the market as a way to stimulate local economy while informing the public about ecological impact of shopping within your community. \n\nLast year’s Make Love Market brought over 700 people out to the old Visitor Center at Love Park\, soon projected to be a restaurant\, but now home to Irwin’s light install. This is the third Make Love Market along with weddings on Valentine’s Day at Love Park. Vendors include a local caricature artist who will be onsite to paint couples\, sweet treats from NiniBsweets\, self-love gifts from Not a Bad Life and Tinder profile reviews from Free Dating Advice Philly.

SUMMARY:Daylily Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:Daylily is a feature length documentary that explores the devotion surrounding a plant that blooms for only one day. Through the personal stories of gardeners from different backgrounds\, the film reflects on the fleeting beauty of life and the quiet meaning found in moments that often pass unnoticed. By observing these flowers\, which appear briefly and are found everywhere\, the film invites viewers to recognize the same fragility\, value\, and presence within themselves. \n \n\nDuring the making of the film\, I traveled to nine U.S. states and two countries\, interviewing gardeners along the way\, and ultimately finished the project with a deeper appreciation for the small\, often overlooked moments we pass by every day. One of the most meaningful moments in the film centers on what many people casually call “ditch lilies.” Flowers that are easy to ignore slowly become something an entire community learns to truly see and celebrate.\n\n \n\nAnother powerful story comes from the history of daylily hybridizers and the ongoing efforts of today’s growers who are shaping the future of the plant.\n\n \n\nWorking on this project changed my perspective on life\, and I hope it can offer the same inspiration to those who watch it as it did for me while creating it. This film brings warmth to winter and allows audiences to experience the peace and unexpected gifts that flowers bring to us all.

SUMMARY:Book Talk with Judith Enck of Beyond Plastics & WHYY's Susan Phillips
DESCRIPTION:Join Judith Enck\, president of Beyond Plastics in conversation with WHYY senior climate\, environment and energy reporter\, Susan Phillips to learn more about the new book\, “The Problem with Plastic: How We Can Save Ourselves and Our Planet Before It’s Too Late.”\nPlastic is everywhere — wrapped around our food\, stitched into our clothes\, even coursing through our veins. What began as a marvel of modern science has become a toxic industry that is harming our health\, polluting our planet\, and driving climate change. According to a recent report in The Lancet\, the world is in a plastics crisis\, causing disease and death from infancy to old age\, and covering the planet with 8 billion tons of plastic waste. Without bold new laws\, these problems will only worsen. Plastic production has increased exponentially since single-use plastic’s start\, from 2 million tons per year in 1950 to 450 million tons per year today. And production is expected to triple by 2060. Given that less than 6% of plastic is actually recycled in the United States\, all that plastic will continue to harm us\, our communities\, and our environment. \nThe good news is there’s still time to turn off the tap and live in a world without pointless plastic. That’s the hopeful message at the heart of the new book\, “The Problem with Plastic: How We Can Save Ourselves and Our Planet Before It’s Too Late” from The New Press by Judith Enck and Beyond Plastics with Adam Mahoney. \n—\nJudith Enck is the founder and president of Beyond Plastics\, whose mission is to end plastic pollution everywhere. She was appointed by President Obama to serve as regional administrator in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2009 and served as deputy secretary for the environment in the New York Governor’s Office. She is currently a professor at Bennington College. \nSusan Phillips is WHYY’s senior reporter/editor\, covering climate\, energy\, and environment as part of the WHYY News Climate Desk. She is a founding member of the award-winning StateImpact Pennsylvania website and a member of NPR’s energy and environment coverage team. She’s a recipient of the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Journalism Award for her coverage of fracking in Pennsylvania. She’s also won the Associated Press Sandy Starobin Award for uncovering threats to drinking water related to gas drilling. She has received ten Edward R. Murrow awards including a National Murrow for a series of videos spotlighting local climate solutions.

SUMMARY:Discovery Day - Rock Climbing\, Sustainability & more
DESCRIPTION:Discovery Days are monthly events at the Discovery Center that are free and open to the public. These events are co-hosted by Philadelphia Outward Bound School (POBS) and Audubon Mid-Atlantic (AMA). Each month provides opportunities for community members to experience different adventures and activities related to the outdoors. Come visit! \n \nIn March\, POBS will be offering free rock climbing at our indoor rock wall. The activity is suitable for participants of any experience level\, including beginners\, ages 8 and up. POBS will provide equipment and instruction. Four climbing sessions will be offered over the course of the day on a first come\, first serve basis. Participants must fill out a risk and liability waiver in order to participate. Children and youth must be accompanied by an adult age 18 or older. \n \nAudubon Mid-Atlantic will be hosting an Environmental Resource Fair from 11-3pm\, and the launch of our Resource Library from 2-3:30pm! \n\n\n \nCheck out the resource fair near the Parking Lot (or in the great hall if it rains) and receive resources from organizations that are building sustainable\, healthy communities and ecosystems. Come to Audubon’s table around 1:30pm to listen about our sustainability work! If you are interested in tabling at the fair\, fill out this form. We are also partnering with Energy Coordinating Agency who will provide a PGW Conservation Workshop with DIY kits from 11:30-1pm. Click here to sign up! \n\n \nWalk up the trail to our Lobby to celebrate the launch of our brand new Resource Library! Volunteers will be helping to cut\, remove\, and dispose of sections of fencing\, and then installing the new low visibility cables. Brief orientation sessions will take place at the top of the hour from 10 am-1 pm. Please wear work shoes or boots and long sleeves. Gloves and safety equipment will be provided. SUMMARY:Aquatic Saturday at the Discovery Center - Clever Critters!
DESCRIPTION:The Strawberry Mansion Lake has been here for decades\, let’s see what’s inside! Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic in observing and documenting this aquatic ecosystem as the seasons change. \nFor April 4th\, we’re focusing on our insect larvae and caring for their habitats. We’re using Leaf Packets to collect our aquatic macroinvertebrates\, sampling in different spots in the reservoir. Their presence can help us plan future habitat restoration. You’ll learn how to identify what we find\, and assist with planting native plants. Joining us is AMA Delaware River Watershed team\, and they’ll host a separate activity on the trail: showing us how to plant native bushes that can provide more habitat for our insects. \nThroughout the year\, you can try our rotating activities of exploring microorganisms and macroinvertebrate sampling during warmer weather. This community science data will be collected and utilized for future management. Kid-friendly activities are available like using children binoculars\, scavenger hunts\, arts and crafts (adult supervision is needed). Lastly\, take a walk on our trail and waterwalk to learn more about our conservation projects! Reach out to audubon@discoveryphila.org if you have any questions. \nRegister here!
