SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Green Elephant: a Sustainable Holiday Party
DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel our annual Green Elephant party.  We’re so grateful for your continued support\, flexibility\, and understanding\, and we can’t wait to be back together for our January event – our third annual volunteer matchmaking! \n\n\n\nCelebrate the holiday season with Green Philly at our second annual Green Elephant: a sustainable twist on the classic gift-swap game. Connect and network with fellow sustainability-minded friends while enjoying a fun\, eco-friendly evening. \n\n\n\nHere’s how the gift exchange works: Instead of buying something new\, bring a handcrafted\, thrifted\, or repurposed gift that you already have – keeping holiday waste to a minimum and the joy at a maximum! Please bring gifts wrapped\, and you’ll be able to share the story behind the gift after someone opens it. \n\n\n\nPlus\, you’ll get a special sneak peek into Green Philly’s plans for 2026\, and plenty of time to mix\, mingle\, and celebrate together.

SUMMARY:The Tapcracker
DESCRIPTION:This holiday season\, join The Lady Hoofers Tap Ensemble\, Philadelphia’s own all-women tap company\, for The Tapcracker! \n?Hailed as a “real delight” (ThINKing Dance)\, this all-tap version of the holiday favorite has “taken its rightful place among the Philadelphia holiday traditions on the Avenue of the Arts” (Broad Street Review). With a cast of over 40 dancers from PA\, NJ\, and DE\, The Tapcracker transports audiences to Paris\, where an infestation of rats has thrown the city into chaos: toy soldiers guard the Eiffel Tower\, mice wreak havoc in the Metro\, and Duke Ellington’s swinging rendition of the beloved Tchaikovsky score will leave you dancing in your seat.

SUMMARY:Winter Gulls at Glen Foerd
DESCRIPTION:Glen Foerd mansion sits along the Delaware River in the northeastern-most corner of Philly and is one of the best places in the city to study gulls during the winter. While there is no guarantee\, we are hoping to see a rare gull such as Iceland or Glaucous Gull. There should also be a good amount of waterfowl out on the river and we can discuss how to distinguish Double-crested Cormorants from the Great Cormorants that visit the area in winter.\n\nWe plan this as a stationary event overlooking the river\, but if folks want\, we can also explore the parkland surrounding the mansion.\nPlease dress according to the expected weather.\n\nWe will meet at 1 pm at the flagpole along the river. Folks can join at any point during the event. There is limited parking on-site and along the surrounding roads so please share a ride if you can. The location is also reachable by bus lines 19 and 84. The Torresdale regional rail station is a 15 min walk away.\n\nNo binoculars? No worries! Birding backpacks with binoculars and field guides are on loan at the following local Philly libraries: Andorra\, Cobbs Creek\, Cecil B. Moore\, Chestnut Hill\, Eastwick\, Falls of Schuylkill\, Fishtown\, Fox Chase\, Greater Olney\, Independence Library\, Logan\, Lovett Memorial\, Northeast Regional\, Oak Lane\, Parkway Central\, Richmond\, South Philly\, Torresdale\, West Philadelphia Regional\, and Widener.\n\nFor questions\, please reach out to birdphillywalks@gmail.com.\n\nTrip Leader: Holger Pflicke

DESCRIPTION:Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead\n\n\nOur 550th Production\n\nBy Bert V. Royal\nDirected by Norman Burnosky\nJanuary 9th\, 10th\, 11th\, 16th\, 17th\, 18th\, 23rd\, 24th\, 25th\, 2026\nFriday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m.\, Sunday at 2:00 p.m.\n \nPurchase tickets\nWhen CB’s dog dies from rabies\, CB begins to question the existence of an afterlife. His best friend is too burnt out to provide any coherent speculation; his sister has gone goth; his ex-girlfriend has recently been institutionalized; and his other friends are too inebriated to give him any sort of solace. But a chance meeting with an artistic kid\, the target of this group’s bullying\, offers CB peace of mind and sets in motion a friendship that will push teen angst to the very limits. \nWarning: Contains adult themes and adult language\, it is not suitable for young children. SUMMARY:Weeknights at the Wagner: Growing Old in the Jungle
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\n\n\nPrimatologist Ben Finkel explores what elderhood means for chimpanzees and other animals in the wild.\n\n\n\nWEEKNIGHTS AT THE WAGNER\nGrowing Old in the Jungle: The Challenges of Aging for Wild Chimpanzees\nwith Dr. Ben Finkel\n\nIt was once thought that wild animals rarely lived long enough to experience age-related declines. However\, substantial evidence has since emerged that senescence does occur in natural populations\, and these deteriorations in vitality are nearly universal across the animal kingdom—shaping survival and reproduction in many species. During this talk\, Dr. Finkel will use chimpanzees as a window into aging in the wild.\n\nLike humans\, our closest living relatives are exceptionally long-lived and\, at first glance\, appear to age gracefully: maintaining body condition and social integration well into old age. Drawing on data from wild male chimpanzees at Ngogo in Kibale National Park\, Uganda\, Dr. Finkel explores growing old in the wild\, challenges of foraging\, travel\, and mating\, and whether chimpanzee’s seemingly graceful aging reflects the adoption of new strategies to compensate for these age-related changes.\n\nBy identifying the mechanisms that link senescence to behavior in a long-lived wild species\, this research offers a lens into how aging has evolved in natural environments and offers a comparative perspective on the evolutionary foundations of longevity\, including in humans.\n\nAn evening lecture series\, Weeknights at the Wagner\, invites experts into our Victorian lecture hall to speak on a range of science and history of science related subjects. Each talk includes a Q&A with the speaker.\nAbout the Speaker\nBen Finkel is a biological anthropologist and primatologist whose research focuses on the evolution of senescence and life-history theory. He is currently a Lecturer at Dartmouth College. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2024\, where his dissertation examined the functional challenges of aging in wild chimpanzees at Ngogo\, Uganda.
Ben Finkel\nIt was once thought that wild animals rarely lived long enough to experience age-related declines. Ben’s broader research interests include foraging behavior\, dental wear\, fecal particle size\, the social function of testosterone\, and conservation psychology\, with particular attention to the media portrayal of primates.
