SUMMARY:Daylily Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:Daylily is a feature length documentary that explores the devotion surrounding a plant that blooms for only one day. Through the personal stories of gardeners from different backgrounds\, the film reflects on the fleeting beauty of life and the quiet meaning found in moments that often pass unnoticed. By observing these flowers\, which appear briefly and are found everywhere\, the film invites viewers to recognize the same fragility\, value\, and presence within themselves. \n \n\nDuring the making of the film\, I traveled to nine U.S. states and two countries\, interviewing gardeners along the way\, and ultimately finished the project with a deeper appreciation for the small\, often overlooked moments we pass by every day. One of the most meaningful moments in the film centers on what many people casually call “ditch lilies.” Flowers that are easy to ignore slowly become something an entire community learns to truly see and celebrate.\n\n \n\nAnother powerful story comes from the history of daylily hybridizers and the ongoing efforts of today’s growers who are shaping the future of the plant.\n\n \n\nWorking on this project changed my perspective on life\, and I hope it can offer the same inspiration to those who watch it as it did for me while creating it. This film brings warmth to winter and allows audiences to experience the peace and unexpected gifts that flowers bring to us all.

SUMMARY:Book Talk with Judith Enck of Beyond Plastics & WHYY's Susan Phillips
DESCRIPTION:Join Judith Enck\, president of Beyond Plastics in conversation with WHYY senior climate\, environment and energy reporter\, Susan Phillips to learn more about the new book\, “The Problem with Plastic: How We Can Save Ourselves and Our Planet Before It’s Too Late.”\nPlastic is everywhere — wrapped around our food\, stitched into our clothes\, even coursing through our veins. What began as a marvel of modern science has become a toxic industry that is harming our health\, polluting our planet\, and driving climate change. According to a recent report in The Lancet\, the world is in a plastics crisis\, causing disease and death from infancy to old age\, and covering the planet with 8 billion tons of plastic waste. Without bold new laws\, these problems will only worsen. Plastic production has increased exponentially since single-use plastic’s start\, from 2 million tons per year in 1950 to 450 million tons per year today. And production is expected to triple by 2060. Given that less than 6% of plastic is actually recycled in the United States\, all that plastic will continue to harm us\, our communities\, and our environment. \nThe good news is there’s still time to turn off the tap and live in a world without pointless plastic. That’s the hopeful message at the heart of the new book\, “The Problem with Plastic: How We Can Save Ourselves and Our Planet Before It’s Too Late” from The New Press by Judith Enck and Beyond Plastics with Adam Mahoney. \n—\nJudith Enck is the founder and president of Beyond Plastics\, whose mission is to end plastic pollution everywhere. She was appointed by President Obama to serve as regional administrator in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2009 and served as deputy secretary for the environment in the New York Governor’s Office. She is currently a professor at Bennington College. \nSusan Phillips is WHYY’s senior reporter/editor\, covering climate\, energy\, and environment as part of the WHYY News Climate Desk. She is a founding member of the award-winning StateImpact Pennsylvania website and a member of NPR’s energy and environment coverage team. She’s a recipient of the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Journalism Award for her coverage of fracking in Pennsylvania. She’s also won the Associated Press Sandy Starobin Award for uncovering threats to drinking water related to gas drilling. She has received ten Edward R. Murrow awards including a National Murrow for a series of videos spotlighting local climate solutions.

SUMMARY:Aquatic Saturday at the Discovery Center - Clever Critters!
DESCRIPTION:The Strawberry Mansion Lake has been here for decades\, let’s see what’s inside! Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic in observing and documenting this aquatic ecosystem as the seasons change. \nFor April 4th\, we’re focusing on our insect larvae and caring for their habitats. We’re using Leaf Packets to collect our aquatic macroinvertebrates\, sampling in different spots in the reservoir. Their presence can help us plan future habitat restoration. You’ll learn how to identify what we find\, and assist with planting native plants. Joining us is AMA Delaware River Watershed team\, and they’ll host a separate activity on the trail: showing us how to plant native bushes that can provide more habitat for our insects. \nThroughout the year\, you can try our rotating activities of exploring microorganisms and macroinvertebrate sampling during warmer weather. This community science data will be collected and utilized for future management. Kid-friendly activities are available like using children binoculars\, scavenger hunts\, arts and crafts (adult supervision is needed). Lastly\, take a walk on our trail and waterwalk to learn more about our conservation projects! Reach out to audubon@discoveryphila.org if you have any questions. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge at The Woodlands
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting City Nature Challenge on Saturday\, April 25 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at The Woodlands! (Raindate: 4/26) \n\n\n\nIn partnership with Green Philly\, The Woodlands\, Feminist Bird Club Philly\, Andrew the Arborist\, Disability Pride PA\, the Philadelphia Mycology Club and City Nature Challenge participants will use the app iNaturalist to explore the biodiversity of The Woodlands (an incredible green space located in West Philadelphia) all while participating in community science! Community science data collected through iNaturalist observations is key to help monitor urban biodiversity health. \n\n\n\nWhat is the City Nature Challenge? \n\n\n\nThis annual four-day global bioblitz is held annually at the end of April\, where cities collaborate to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal. During a set period of time at a set location\, participants focus on finding and identifying as many species as they can. \n\n\n\nHow do I participate? \n\n\n\nPlease download* the app iNaturalist (it’s free!) to your smart phone\, create an account\, and learn the basics of how to upload an observation. iNaturalist is an app that allows everyone no matter their skill level to find and identify species they come across\, from an unknown plant to a cool bird! \n\n\n\niOS Download  \n\n\n\nAndroid Download  \n\n\n\n*Please note if you do not have a smart phone\, we can group up and take turns! \n\n\n\nWhy should I join? \n\n\n\nFirst\, it’s FUN! Second\, this hands-on event offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature (and others who are interested in urband wildlife) while contributing valuable data to ongoing conservation efforts! And finally\, we are contributing to the 2026 City Nature Challenge where cities around the world collaborate to share observations of nature! \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a seasoned naturalist or a curious beginner\, all are welcome to participate in this accessible\, engaging\, educational experience. Spaces are limited so RSVP to learn more about the urban wildlife in your neighborhood! \n\n\n\nPlease note: The BioBlitz will coincide with the West Philly Craft Fest\, so parking won’t be available on-site. Visitors must park in the surrounding neighborhood\, but The Woodlands is easily accessible by public transit\, with the 40th Street Trolley Portal right across from the gates.
