SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge at The Woodlands
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting City Nature Challenge on Sunday\, April 26 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at The Woodlands! \n\n\n\nIn partnership with Green Philly\, The Woodlands\, Feminist Bird Club Philly\, Andrew the Arborist\, Disability Pride PA\, the Philadelphia Mycology Club and City Nature Challenge participants will use the app iNaturalist to explore the biodiversity of The Woodlands (an incredible green space located in West Philadelphia) all while participating in community science! Community science data collected through iNaturalist observations is key to help monitor urban biodiversity health. \n\n\n\nWhat is the City Nature Challenge? \n\n\n\nThis annual four-day global bioblitz is held annually at the end of April\, where cities collaborate to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal. During a set period of time at a set location\, participants focus on finding and identifying as many species as they can. \n\n\n\nHow do I participate? \n\n\n\nPlease download* the app iNaturalist (it’s free!) to your smart phone\, create an account\, and learn the basics of how to upload an observation. iNaturalist is an app that allows everyone no matter their skill level to find and identify species they come across\, from an unknown plant to a cool bird! \n\n\n\niOS Download  \n\n\n\nAndroid Download  \n\n\n\n*Please note if you do not have a smart phone\, we can group up and take turns! \n\n\n\nWhy should I join? \n\n\n\nFirst\, it’s FUN! Second\, this hands-on event offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature (and others who are interested in urband wildlife) while contributing valuable data to ongoing conservation efforts! And finally\, we are contributing to the 2026 City Nature Challenge where cities around the world collaborate to share observations of nature! \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a seasoned naturalist or a curious beginner\, all are welcome to participate in this accessible\, engaging\, educational experience. Spaces are limited so RSVP to learn more about the urban wildlife in your neighborhood! \n\n\n\nPlease note: The BioBlitz will coincide with the West Philly Craft Fest\, so parking won’t be available on-site. Visitors must park in the surrounding neighborhood\, but The Woodlands is easily accessible by public transit\, with the 40th Street Trolley Portal right across from the gates.

SUMMARY:Aquatic Saturday at the Discovery Center - Clever Critters!
DESCRIPTION:The Strawberry Mansion Lake has been here for decades\, let’s see what’s inside! Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic in observing and documenting this aquatic ecosystem as the seasons change. \nFor April 4th\, we’re focusing on our insect larvae and caring for their habitats. We’re using Leaf Packets to collect our aquatic macroinvertebrates\, sampling in different spots in the reservoir. Their presence can help us plan future habitat restoration. You’ll learn how to identify what we find\, and assist with planting native plants. Joining us is AMA Delaware River Watershed team\, and they’ll host a separate activity on the trail: showing us how to plant native bushes that can provide more habitat for our insects. \nThroughout the year\, you can try our rotating activities of exploring microorganisms and macroinvertebrate sampling during warmer weather. This community science data will be collected and utilized for future management. Kid-friendly activities are available like using children binoculars\, scavenger hunts\, arts and crafts (adult supervision is needed). Lastly\, take a walk on our trail and waterwalk to learn more about our conservation projects! Reach out to audubon@discoveryphila.org if you have any questions. \nRegister here!

Built when the Strawberry Mansion Reservoir was decommissioned in the 1970s\, this chain-link fence will now be replaced with a less obtrusive cable fence. Volunteers will be helping to cut\, remove\, and dispose of sections of fencing\, and then installing the new low visibility cables. Brief orientation sessions will take place at the top of the hour from 10 am-1 pm. Please wear work shoes or boots and long sleeves. Gloves and safety equipment will be provided.
