The new winter season begins at 4:47 p.m. on December 21. But what exactly happens at that moment?
On a lively walk through a winter forest, Mike Weilbacher explains the science of the season, like why “solstice” translates as “sun standing,” why mistletoe and holly are symbols of the December holidays, why light is central to these holidays, where all the insects go, and why birds migrate. He’ll weave in legends and stories of solstice celebrations from many cultures that tried to explain winter, and we’ll be together at that magical moment when the sun stands still on the solstice.
