Stockton’s latest works, made specifically for this exhibition, focus on the radical female voice and the breadth of its interpretation through hand-drawn imagery. Working from photographs of women taken exclusively by men – including Angela Davis, Joan Didion, Kim Gordon, Georgia O’Keefe, Alice Neel and Gertrude Stein – Stockton investigates how the popular or sensational is made familiar through rendering these intimate portraits using pencil and paper in extraordinary detail. The exhibit will also present some of Stockton’s previously exhibited projects that are largely and exclusively portraits of male subjects.
