Today is Energy Efficiency Day in Philadelphia

Councilmember Katherine Gilmore introduced the resolution to make October 7, 2020 as Energy Efficiency Day

Councilmember-at-Large Katherine Gilmore Richardson introduced a resolution recognizing October 7, 2020 as Energy Efficiency Day in Philadelphia.

Energy Efficiency Day is a nationwide effort on the first Wednesday in October by companies, government, and utilities.

Energy efficiency saves money on utility bills and is the quickest, cheapest way to meet our energy goals. Philadelphia has taken on energy efficiency initiatives including the upcoming LED streetlight project, efficiency upgrades in municipal buildings, the Building Energy Performance Policy, and the Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) Program.

Councilmembers Bass, Brooks, Gauthier, Green, Gym, Henon, Parker, Domb, Thomas, and Squilla co-sponsored the resolution.

“Smarter energy use saves money, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and boosts job creation.”

Christine Knapp, Director, Office of Sustainability

Director of Sustainability Christine Knapp pointed to Philadelphia as a leader in energy efficiency. In a press release, she stated:

“Smarter energy use saves money, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and boosts job creation. Philadelphia has become a nationwide leader on energy efficiency policy, and we are excited to continue working with Council to create a. cleaner, healthier, climate-resilient future.”
